When you’re already stretching every dollar, adding diapers, formula, and a place to sleep for a new baby can feel overwhelming. So if you’re feeling overwhelmed about how to afford having a child, you’re not alone.
Budgeting for a baby on a limited income is possible with the right strategy and local resources. I will also provide a variety of resources that are available to parents living in North Central Kansas, along with strategies for budgeting.
Where to Start
First off, you do NOT need all of the items you would typically want or need immediately. In the first month, a newborn only needs a safe place to sleep, some diapers and wipes, some onesies, and a way to eat. Everything else can wait.
Make a list of what you’ll absolutely need in that first month. Then reach out to family members, friends, and anyone else you feel comfortable asking for assistance. Most new parents receive a majority of their baby supplies from family and friends in the form of hand-me-downs, so don’t hesitate to reach out. Check out Facebook Buy Nothing groups and local church rummage sales, too. Keep an open mind toward accepting used baby items because babies grow out of every piece of clothing they own before you can turn around.
Free Baby Supplies Through Earn While You Learn
One wonderful resource you can use to get free baby supplies while you’re in North Central Kansas is Heart Choices. They have a program called Earn While You Learn. Here’s how it works.
Every time you attend a parenting class about things like caring for a newborn, how to sleep safely, and what will happen in labor, you earn points. You can then use those points to get items such as a car seat, a pack-n-play, diapers, clothes, and bottles, depending on what your biggest needs are.
The program is completely free. You do not have to provide any proof of income or anything like that. Just come in and learn, and you will have a great opportunity to stock up on those essentials while building your confidence as a parent. Many women tell us they leave feeling less scared and more prepared.
Financial Help for Pregnant Women in Kansas
Besides Earn While You Learn, there are other resources you can access. If your income is above typical Medicaid limits, or if you lack or have limited health insurance, contact your local Department for Children & Families office or apply online to see if you qualify for Kansas Medicaid.
The WIC program also provides support to pregnant women and children through their monthly food benefits. They offer support for breastfeeding, as well. To find out how to get signed up for WIC in Beloit, Concordia, Osborne, or Smith Center, contact your local health department.
Many of the utility companies that serve the area have programs to help with payment of bills during pregnancy and postpartum. In addition, a lot of rural Kansas hospitals have charity care programs that will work with you to provide you with financial assistance prior to being discharged.
What About the Big Stuff
Finding a used crib and car seat that meet current safety standards can be challenging, as regulations continually change. Our goal at Earn While You Learn is to help new parents have a safe crib and car seat before they leave the hospital. This is a common worry for many new parents.
Formula, Breastfeeding, and Feeding Your Baby
If you need to obtain formula, talk to your pediatrician or go to your local health department, as most of them have sample cans or can assist you in locating manufacturer coupons. Breastfeeding is free if it works for you, but many women are unable to breastfeed, and that’s okay. You should not be embarrassed to use formula.
You Don’t Have to Figure It Out Alone
Budgeting for a new baby is tough if you’re doing it on your own. However, there are many people in the community who are interested in you and your struggle, and are available to help. Many women who come into our office have stated that they had no idea how much assistance was available to them, until they just asked.
