You’ve just learned that your partner is pregnant. And rather than feeling elated, you want to run away. More often than you’d think, guys experience something similar after getting surprising news. The shock hits, the weight of it lands, and suddenly you’re trying to figure out how to be someone you never planned to be. That overwhelming feeling is normal. Many guys find that not knowing what to do next is one of the hardest parts.

You don’t have to have everything figured out today. One step forward is all you need.

Breathe First. Then Talk.

When the shock is fresh, your brain isn’t going to make good decisions. Your body is dumping adrenaline and cortisol, and you’re in survival mode. Don’t plan yet. The first step is to find ten to fifteen minutes where you can just breathe. Walk, sit in your car, whatever you do, find a way to clear your head. You don’t have to say anything to anyone yet.

Then, reach out to someone close to you. A friend, a parent, a mentor. Let them hear you verbalize “she’s pregnant.” Saying it out loud with them will help you feel less alone as you process the news.

There’s a Lot You Need to Know Right Now

You’re probably imagining all the worst things that could happen. But most of the practical things are much simpler than you think. Here’s what really counts in the first month or two:

  • Make sure it’s a real pregnancy. Home pregnancy tests can tell if she’s pregnant, but a lab-quality test and ultrasound will give you real answers. Heart Choices offers both for free, no income check, no appointment needed.
  • Talk to her. She is probably just as scared as you are. Before you start giving her solutions, ask her how she feels about this pregnancy. Asking her that will probably help her feel safe enough to open up to you.
  • Find one honest piece of information. Call us, stop by, or find out what a pregnancy actually costs in the first year. Once you get the facts, the stories you’ve made in your head about what is going to happen won’t seem as scary.

You’re Not the Side Character Here

One reason unplanned pregnancies can be so difficult for men is that most of the resources available are geared toward women. It feels like you’re supposed to show up and help her while you can’t express any emotion. It isn’t fair or real.

We have a Fatherhood Program built for guys like you. This program covers all the practical issues, including what to expect during the pregnancy, how to be a supportive partner but not lose yourself in the process, and what your rights and responsibilities are as a dad. You can also earn items for your baby through the Earn While You Learn program. That’s really helpful for those who are financially struggling.

What About Telling Someone About the Pregnancy?

Sharing the news with others can be very challenging. You might fear how your parents will respond, or what your friends may say. You may also fear that your partner’s family will blame you for the pregnancy. If that sounds like you, we encourage you and your partner to discuss who you’ll tell first. The two of you can decide when and how to announce it to others. We’d suggest not making a big announcement, but instead telling one or two key people who will actually be able to help you.

While it’s scary to tell people, many men find that friends and family step up to support them more than they expected.

You Can Handle This

We have seen a number of scared young men walk through our doors in Beloit, Osborne, Concordia, and Smith Center. Most leave looking less burdened. They don’t leave because we fixed everything for them. They leave because they discovered they weren’t alone in this situation anymore.

You don’t have to be completely ready to be a dad today. You just have to be willing to talk to someone who has been through this process before.

Would you like to talk about what’s next?

Feel free to call us at (785) 738-3433, or stop by our Beloit office at 602 W 6th St. We are open Tuesday through Friday, and no appointment is needed to meet with us.
